MARRIAGE CERTIFICATE

Question: How to get a marriage certificate attested?

Document once apostilled by MEA, New Delhi, it is not required to be further authenticated by the Indian Embassy in Ankara because both India and Turkey are members of the Apostille Convention 1961. However, if the Turkish authorities insist for the Embassy’s attestation following procedure may be followed.

  1. Personal presence of either of the spouse.
  2. Valid passport in original of both the spouses.
  3. Passport photocopy (first and last page).
  4. Marriage certificate issued in India, original and photocopy attested by Notary public of the district concerned and counter-attested by the Home Department of the State concerned. Thereafter, it is to be attested/apostilled by the Attestation Section of the Consular, Passport & Visa (CPV) Division of the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi

Marriage certificate issued in Turkey needs to be apostilled by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Turkey and need not further be authenticated by the Indian Embassy in Ankara for use in India.

Marriage certificate issued in other country needs to be attested by the Indian High Commission / Embassy / Consulate in that country before presenting it to the Indian Embassy in Ankara for attestation.
